How to Become a More Efficient Freelancer
November 23rd, 2009
Freelancing can sometimes be hard to keep up with. You’re a one-man band, and don’t have support from peers or colleagues like in the usual working environment, so there’s no one to turn to when you need a bit of advice. That’s why it’s important you learn how to become efficient and effective at what you do early on, so it doesn’t become a disaster later on. Here are a few tips that will get you on your way to becoming a “super freelancer”.
1. Batch Work
You should try and batch work that require similar skills, for example, if you’ve got 3 websites to design and code from scratch, try to work solely through the design process first, as that requires a certain mindset which you can maintain throughout doing each design. This way, your focus will only be on design and you’ll get your task done more efficiently. You can then go on to worry about coding the designs, and batch them together so you’re doing a coding stretch before going onto something else.
2. Outsource
A lot of freelancers feel it dishonest to outsource work, but in some cases, it’s a necessity. For example, if you’re a web designer, and don’t have time to code up the un-coded templates you just completed, there’s no harm in outsourcing to a coding company. You cannot, however, outsource the design aspect of your work, as your skill as a designer is why the client has hired you in the first place.
3. Focus
In order to focus solely on the task at hand, it’s imperative that you get rid of all outside distractions. If you work at home, this is extremely important as distractions such as noisy children, or having to pop down to the shops really break work-flows badly. Allot a time of day where you’ll have minimal distractions (usually early during the day for me) and buckle down on some real work.
Conclusion
Becoming as efficient as possible as a freelancer, without sacrificing on quality of your work is a never-ending struggle, and you should never give in to laziness and procrastination. Work at your schedule every day, and you’ll be a master freelancer in no time.
